Congresswoman Johnson’s Statement on the 28th Annual State of the Climate Report

Aug 2, 2018
Press Release

Dallas, TX – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, ranking member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, released the following statement after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 28th annual State of the Climate report, which found record high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, rising sea levels, rising global land and ocean temperatures, and record low sea ice coverage in both the Arctic and Antarctic:

“I am not surprised to learn that 2017 was the third warmest year on record, following the highs set in 2016 and 2015. It seems that we hear of new devastating wildfires, catastrophic flooding, and other extreme events happening around the globe on a daily basis. For over 40 years, science has shown that life on this planet would be faced with a climate crisis. We have known that it is imperative that we act to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change. Our children and grandchildren’s futures depend on our ability to address this issue with a sense of urgency. I implore my colleagues to make this issue a priority before it is too late.”
