Congresswoman Johnson’s Statement on 85th Anniversary of Social Security
Dallas, TX – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson issued the following statement marking the 85th anniversary of Social Security, which was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935:
“In the midst of the Great Depression, our nation made a fundamental promise that a lifetime of hard work would be met with the dignity and peace of mind of a secure retirement. For the past 85 years, Social Security has stood as a pillar of economic security and opportunity for millions of American families, whether in retirement, disability or following the death of a loved one.
“Social Security is the Nation’s most successful program. If Congress does not act, beneficiaries will face a 20% cut in benefits after 2035. Additionally, this President has refused to deviate from his plan to cut payroll taxes to address our current economic turmoil – not only would this be ineffective, it would defund Social Security and further accelerate impending cuts to benefits. This is indefensible, this program has changed the lives and livelihoods of seniors across the Nation and at home, by lifting more than 1.6 million Texans out of poverty in 2017 alone. On behalf of the over four million beneficiaries in Texas, I am proud to support and defend Social Security for our seniors and all our future generations.”
