Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Mourns the Passing of Former Congressman William H. Gray III

Washington, DC – (Tuesday, July 2, 2013)  On Monday, July 1, 2013, former Congressman William H. Gray III passed away in London. Congressman Gray was the first African American to serve as the House Majority Whip and as the  Chair of the House Budget Committee. Congresswoman Johnson released the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend and mentor. Congressman Gray tirelessly served the people of Philadelphia and this Nation with the utmost passion and commitment. During his tenure in Congress, he spoke out on the apartheid in South Africa, enhanced the infrastructure in Philadelphia, and advocated on behalf of the middle class and under-served communities. He was an exceptional leader whose legacy will forever remain in our hearts and minds. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Andrea, his three sons, and his family and friends as they mourn the loss of their loved one.”
